26-year-old young man who raped 83-year-old woman was convicted to 5.5 years of imprisonment

On January 26, in Ijevan, the trial court of the region of Tavush (Judge Rafik Melkonyan) convicted 26-year-old unmarried Aren Sarukhanyan, born in the village of Lejan, the region of Lori, and temporarily residing in Koghb, to five and a half years of imprisonment, in accordance with Section 1, Article 137, Section 1, Article 138 and Section 1, Article 147 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Armenia.

On October 16, 2011, Aren Sarukhanyan, at around 11pm, being under the influence of alcohol, broke into the second floor of 83-year-old resident of  Koghb Arpenik Ananyan’s house by pushing the window open and has raped A. Ananyan for 3 hours, closing the mouth of the lonely old woman, threatening to kill her and punching on the woman’s face and different parts of her body.

As aggravating circumstance, the court took into account that Aren Sarukhanyan was convicted to 3 years and 15 days of imprisonment for a similar crime on November 26, 2009. He was amnestied on May 31, 2011, but his conviction was not expunged.

Before the trial started Aren Sarukhanyan had pled guilty of the charges and had filed a motion for quick trial.
