The Culture of a Country Is Its DNA, the French Ambassador to Armenia

February 24,2012 16:19

Today a forum took place at the French University in Armenia on the topic Whether It Is Possible to Speak of the European Culture, at which Traian Hristea, the head of the EU delegation to Armenia, was also present.

“Culture is wider than merely the traditions of a given country,” said one of the main spokespersons at the forum Henry Renaud, the French Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Armenia. “The culture of a country is its attitude, its DNA. There are many differences between the attitudes of countries till now, as the approaches of France and Germany to a set of issues. E.g., the French government thinks it is necessary to support the activities of the Central Bank, whereas for Germans the independence of the Central Bank cannot be disrupted. In this instance, it is necessary to come to a mutual agreement. The biggest achievement of Europe is the common currency, euro. Although there are fields, in which there is much left to do – for example, determining a common foreign policy for Europe.”

Talking about the European culture, Mr. Renaud reminded of the times, when Europe was called “Europe Without a Soul” or “Europe of Traders.” “The policy adopted by Jean Monerret at the time that aimed at not exchanging goods, but making people closer to each other played a very important role.” Arev Samuelyan, the Deputy Minister of Culture of the Republic of Armenia, who was present at the forum, said that Armenia actively participated in the European cultural projects, such as initiatives Let’s Preserve Our Cultural Cities and Literary Ark. She affirmed that a regional school for cinematography called Golden Apricot had been established, at which a set of European film workers had held a master class. The event called Museum Night will be held for the eighth time this year.
