Toughening up Armenia’s anti-Turkish stance: a re-demanded political good

April 22,2014 21:27

Former Foreign Minister of Nagorno Karabakh considers recalling of the Armenia-Turkey protocols as much senseless as their signing

“Based on recent geopolitical developments, one can come to the conclusion that toughening up Armenia’s anti-Turkish stance will become a re-demanded political good. Once again, our mistakes made in the past and countless victims will be used by others to solve their own geopolitical, military, and economic problems,” this opinion was expressed by the NKR former Foreign Minister Arman Melikyan, in the interview with “Aravot”. The matter is that during the lately visit to the Ministry of Defense, Serzh Sargsyan had talked about the Armenian-Turkish protocols, and had noted that all of the former skepticisms about them were groundless. A day before, Serzh Sargsyan’s Spokesman said that before April 24, there would be official statements about the future of the Armenian-Turkish protocols. Whether these statements are the result of domestic political rearrangements, since the ARF party, to make a coalition, is bringing forward the satisfaction of its seven recommendations, one of which is recalling of Armenia’s signature from the protocols, for which the ARF party left the coalition in time. To our question that the protocols at this moment, in fact, are not topical, whether it is likely that the ARF will be shown a respect, the Secretary of RPA faction Hovhannes Sahakyan said that even if official Yerevan recalls its signature, it will not also be a move made under the influence of the time, rather than a balanced move as during their initialing. Arman Melikyan was reluctant to detail his fears, but he said that in his opinion, he would not be mistaken if he says that over the next two to three years more anti-Turkish posture we adopt in the context of foreign policy conducted by us, weaker we will make our own positions about Artsakh. “It would be good if today’s officials responsible for the country’s foreign policy and Armenia’s political parties, including the Dashnak party, seriously consider promotional activities initiated by them, because if you are not capable to run independent and tangibly effective policy, then at least do not cause additional complications with senseless and unproductive promotional activities for your country and your people. The new geopolitical situation established around us suggests that the efforts focused on the recognition of the Armenian Genocide should not be subjugated to the logic of “gold numbers” becoming dear to the heart and mind of the Armenian ruling elite. Now, recalling of protocols is as useless and harmful as once their signing,” said Arman Melikyan.
