Director of the National Archives. “How can archival documents about Mikoyan be incredible?”

June 04,2014 18:51

After controversial and contradictory opinions about erecting the statue to Anastas Mikoyan, the RPA and PAP faction of the Yerevan City Council decided to vote in favor of the proposal to erect the statue and rejected the suggestion of “Barev Yerevan” to review the decision. In the conversation with journalists, Deputy Mayor of Yerevan Municipality, Kamo Areyan, referring to archival documents about Mikoyan’s anti-Armenian activities, which recently are widely circulating on the Internet, has made such an allegation, “Archival documents are passing the examination of credibility. These facts should have been verified.” The Director of Armenia’s National Archives, Amatuni Virabyan, was very much surprised at Mr. Areyan’s this statement, “I am against the placement of the statue. I am aware of Kamo Areyan’s statements. It is not a speech of a professional. All of these documents are from the archives, so what they meant is unacceptable for me. I have read it. It cannot happen. How can archival document be incredible? He has said it just for saying,” he said, in the conversation with Aravot.am. Mr. Virabyan asserted that these documents reflect the reality and are on historical basis. “He has said just for saying. Otherwise, how can an archival document be incredible? Or, may be the Politburo’s decision is incredible?” To our observation that according to Kamo Areyan these documents should undergo investigation, Amatuni Virabyan countered, “There is no such a thing. What investigation? In the end, can they say that there was no Politburo decision that the number of executed in Armenia should be increased?”
