What did the NATO Summit give to us?

September 10,2014 18:30

The theme of “Aravot” online on the air is discussed between NA MP Sukias Avetisyan (RPA) and Deputy Chairman of “Heritage” party, Armen Martirosyan.

Aram Abrahamyan – Was the NATO Summit so much important event that our media and politicians paid that much attention to it? We are not a NATO member, aren’t we?

Sukias Avetisyan – We are not a NATO member, but we give much importance to it because, first, it seems to be our first attendance at the presidential level, at least, we have not participated in it for a long time, and secondly, it was very essential with regard to the fierce situation on our borders on June-August, and since we are also partners with NATO, it is very important to see how the NATO summit will respond to it. Naturally, we clearly understand that this summit was not going to reprimanding anyone on this or that incident, but nevertheless, our president, so to speak, delivered a pre-attacking speech at the summit. The text of adopted declaration was also important.

A. A. – May be we are going too far with it, saying that this wording said this, PACE said this, NATO said this. Aren’t we too much waiting for the texts with a fainting heart?

Armen Martirosyan – Definitely, it may leave a little bit of such impression, but in reality, of course, such discussions are important. You see, actually, the vast majority of progressive, civilized, and developed countries’ leaders were gathered here, if I am not mistaken, the leaders of 48 countries were represented, starting from the President of the U.S.A, and ending with smaller countries. In any case, the most important decisions are taken there. In this tense geopolitical situation with regard to events in Ukraine and Iraq, there are many problems to be solved, and it was also necessary to somehow suspend the advance of the Turkish-Azerbaijani tandem. And finally, Armenia is a state that has a very good partnership with NATO, and I think that this relationship should deepen, but not to the degree of membership. We are in favor of bipartite military relations, let’s say, Armenia-USA, Armenia-France, it provide a greater flexibility than military alliances. Anyway, it is clear that the summit was a very important platform for speaking.

A. A. – The President of Armenia has not attended the Lisbon and Chicago summits, because the declarations mentioned the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan. A similar mentioning was also to exist in Newport and it did. Why did Serzh Sargsyan, however, attend it?

S. A. – If there is an invitation to such a high summit, and if we have a problem, it is not that we need sit at home to solve this problem and to wait to see who will solve your problem instead of you. The problem here was as follows, the president was ready to deliver a speech and voice all the issues from the high podium that we are all concerned about, including the progressive humankind. I also think that the text of the declaration was the text, which also tried to sober the two countries’ leaders, Turkey and Azerbaijan, who are constantly trying to manipulate the territorial integrity, and hereunder, on the one hand, they do not want to establish political relations with Armenia, and on the other hand, they are trying to constantly create tension through border incidents.
