The Art of listening

September 25,2014 12:44

Our permanent author Shushan Ghazaryan’s subsequent material, which was devoted to months ago meeting held in Prague between the President of Armenia and the Armenians living there, all at once (and, of course, pleasantly for me) called a lot of attention. Although I, to be honest, did not find any sensational discovery in this material. In any case, it evident that the article is worth printing.

I agree with some of the thoughts of Serzh Sargsyan. For instance, that it is unnatural to complain of migration when you yourself did it. Similarly, it is strange, in my opinion, to be upset of alcoholism if you yourself abuse alcohol. Or, to fight against the destruction of wildlife and wear a clothing made of crocodile leather. (I know that the migrants would “throw stone at me”, and I would also publish their opinions with pleasure).

I do not agree with some of the thought of the president. I am sure that any state, even the small one, should fight against monopolies, including the industry of importing sugar. No natural monopolies are contrary to the nature of market relations and hamper economic development. I also do not agree with our accession to the Customs Union, about which I have repeatedly written.

Likewise also thousands of people reading Sushan’s material, I have my views. In accordance with my temperament, I express it calmly and without extra emotions. But emotional responses are also worthy of publication. If there are people who solely see the opportunity of “nitpicking” in this publication (unless, of course, it does not contain swear words), again it should become a public property.

Freedom is more important than being right or wrong by this-or-that side. The most difficult task is not the expression of any thought, but listening someone else’s thought calmly, coolly and impassively, even in the event if you do not like it. We all should learn this “art” every day and improve it, starting from the first figure of the country.

I will illustrate another example. No matter how I treat the second president of Armenia, I particularly do not like that due to some circumstances, the former official appeared in the United States is making revelations “from there” about Kocharyan. They would have more weight if they were done not at a huge distance. But the mentioned revelations are also published in our newspaper.

If I had published in “Aravot” only what I like, then I would refer only to the classical music of the 18-19th centuries.
