German journalist is disappointed with the meeting with Hasan Cemal

December 12,2014 16:42

Barbara Oertel, editor-in-chief of German Foreign Affairs of Tageszeitung Daily, was in Yerevan on a working visit. On December 8-12, under the “Armenian-German Journalism School” project hosted at the Yerevan State University, the latter referred to the coverage of international conflicts in the German media.

The German journalist, being well aware of Armenia’s regional issues, on December 11, attended the meeting with the Turkish writer Hasan Cemal, grandson of one of the organizers of the Armenian Genocide, Djemal Pasha. Hasan Cemal was presenting his “1915. The Armenian Genocide” book.

Whether this historic event will found a place in the daily newspaper published with almost 60 000 copies, Mrs. Oertel replied, “During the whole time, I was taking notes. But the point is that we learned very little about the content of the book.”

The orator complained about the technical errors of the English translation, due to which the text was not so clear for her. She considered impolite the fact of making the audience leave the hall at the end of the meeting because of the screening of the film following the meeting, in the event when everyone was longing to ask questions to the author. “I would like to listen to the Armenian people, and to understand his concern. But alas, it did not happen,” said our interlocutor, adding that she is not going to cover this topic, as she has no clear idea of what Hasan Cemal thinks about normalization of the Armenian-Turkish conflict.

Note that during the meeting and then in the lobby, the audience expressed dissatisfaction with the speech of the Turkish author, in which he qualified the group of Armenians settling a score with Djemal Pasha as a “gang”.

“Whether all of this was false or not, I cannot say, but speaking of the genocide under lack of concession by Turkey is already a big move,” sums up our foreign guest.
