October 05,2015 18:30

“Let’s start with the fact that today Armenia’s armed forces are able to independently provide the security of their own territory. They have everything to safeguard the country’s territorial integrity and sovereignty,” this statement was made today by CSTO Secretary General Nikolay Bordyuzha at the “Marshal Baghramyan” drills, referring to the recent border tension. He noted that according to his sources, Armenia’s security is effectively maintained. “As for the border with Armenia incident perpetrator, I think it is unacceptable that Armenia’s territories are under fire, when heavy weapons are used against civilians.”

Bordyuzha also noted that it is also a concern that there is not response by Armenia’s neighbors to the statements made by CSTO Collective Security Council, leaders of the member states and foreign ministers. “I think that in the event when the number of clashes and bombings are growing on the border, the entire international community should take measures to prevent the escalation of the situation in the region.”

According to him, along with events in Syria and Iraq, the new escalation in the region is unacceptable not only for Armenia but for everyone. “It is unacceptable for CSTO, UN and the OSCE. Therefore, all the superpowers and international organizations should respond to the occurrences and prevent the escalation of the situation.”

To the question of the journalist when CSTO will intervene and try to defend Armenia, Nikolay Bordyuzha replied that it will happen “when Armenia will no more be able to ensure its security and stability. At that time, it turns to its allies and the latter shall decide the type of the assistance. It might be political or financial or a military support. Everything depends on the decision of the Collective Security Council.”
