The route is beyond the group thinking

December 24,2015 19:00

One “small” good job is worth much more than the complaints lasting for 25 years

Every nation has its stereotype of group thinking. The Russians, for example, are sure that they are living in a hostile circle and can sustain their existence only by fighting wars. This prejudice, of course, is overly advantageous for this country’s leadership by liberating the latter from the heavy duty of developing economy and technologies and raising people’s welfare. If everyone around are enemies, what technologies can we talk about. Certainly, there are also many thinking people in Russia who try to disperse the stereotype of “besieged fortress”, but the majority closes their mouth very quickly as supporters of “liberasts” and “Gаyropе”.

These two ‘wise’ characterizations are also applied in Armenia, but it is not included in our Armenian stereotype, rather say, it is the direct borrowing of our local putin-admirers. Our group thinking of the last quarter-century is to talk about the authorities and rich people from morning till evening, catch the negative news about the accidents, disasters and crime, and to say champingly, “Hey bro, what became out of this country.” Certainly, there are also thinking people among us who say that the life is not limited to it.

But the majority closes their mouth with the following conclusion, “then you are from the side of the authorities”. But apart from the authorities and the rich people, who in Armenia, let’s say, are a few thousand, there are hundreds of thousands of people who, at least theoretically, are not necessarily be the target of hatred and envy, they are living more or less a normal life. There are also people among them who neither kill, nor steal, nor falsify the elections, on the contrary, they are doing kind and good deeds. One of them has adopted disabled children, the other has opened a small soup kitchen, and the third one has not stepped back before the RPA “women teachers” and the criminal elements of the district and has committed his civic duty till the end, it is, indeed, also a good deed.

The young people are gathered in the Facebook group and decided to help a border village. Another group of young people organized a fundraising and donated an apartment to a mother with many children living in Gyumri. They are not millionaires, by helping people, they do not pursue political or “shows off on TV” goals, they just want the life to be better in their country. These young people appraise compassion, empathy, solidarity and cooperation higher than the endless accusations and complaints. Ultimately, there are people who have their own small businesses, pay taxes and ensure a dignified life for them, their employees and their families. (Frankly speaking, I cannot imagine a rich man in our country who pays taxes and has no connection with the ruling elite).

But these positive examples are not spoken much because it does not fit into the public stereotype created over 25 years, which is based on primitive instincts and group thinking. If in your group (real or virtual) it is accepted to reject and complain, then it is very likely that any word or any information about how, for example, young people have decided to collect the garbage piled up around the church, can even raise rage, “What are you talking about, talked about these ones.” In different times, “their” role was played by different “demonized heroes” with respective nicknames and true or fabricated stories.

The experience of 25 years shows that giving a tribute to such group thinking, developing and spreading it is a dead-end road for us. Believe me, we need also to talk and write about positive examples in Armenia and the world, irrespective of how ‘local’ significance they have, it is necessary not only to accuse but also to offer in a calm tone, without hysteric screaming. Maybe, the year 2016 will be turning in this respect. (a joke).
