Sculptor Hayk Tokmajyan’s sculpture caused a great interest in the Festival of Sculptures in La Bresse

Sculptor Hayk Tokmajyan took part in the Festival of Sculptures in La Bresse (France) from April 25 to May 10, which was held under the name Camille Claude. As the artist told “Aravot”, such a festival is being held for the 25th time. Always sculptors working on wood, stone and bronze are invited. “I have also participated in the La Bresse Festival in 2011. Every year, a theme is suggested here, for example, the theme in 2011 was about alchemy,” – said Hayk Tokmajyan. As he said, generally, many artists are mainly working on the wood sculpture for the festival in La Bresse, but there are 3-4 participants who are working on the stone. “I think I have been invited as a participant working on the stone. This time was a jubilee for the La Bresse festival and the organizers have decided to invite people whose works are known and seen, and the authors are respected and popular. Sculptors from different countries were invited, even from Africa, who are working on the bronze by their traditional technologies. This time, there was no specific theme and the organizers wanted to see Camille Claude’s image and composite solution. I was very excited because an opportunity was given to me to create the image of this interesting woman who was a talented sculptor, Rodin’s pupil, his lover, who was sent to a psychiatric hospital, she had a tragic life. Today, her passed path and words are appreciated in France.

They want to revise and understand how Camille worked who had the shadow of Rodin,” – said the Armenian sculptor. He drew parallels between Camilla Claude and another talented artist Frida. Hayk Tokmajyan created the bust of Camilla Claude with a very interesting solution. “Using one of Camilla’s works, the “Waltz” composite, I created her portrait which received a lot of feedback; all were fascinated. The awards in La Bresse festival are designed for the wooden works and does not imply to the stone works. And generally, the winner is determined by popular vote. They were keeping the wooden works with them, while other works either were sold or exhibited in the city, or the author can take it and do what he wants. I am planning to erect this piece of work in front of the City Hall as it is associated with both the city and Camilla, and has received an overall good attitude,” – said Hayk Tokmajyan.
