The “troublemakers” are leaving the EU

June 28,2016 14:02

Political analyst about the results of the referendum in Great Britain

Stepan Grigoryan, Director of the Analytical Centre on Globalization and Regional Cooperation (ACGRC), also political analyst, does not share the view that the European Union will weaken as a result of the referendum in Great Britain. Note that on June 23, by the results of the referendum held in the UK, the majority of the population voted “for” to the proposal to withdraw from the European Union. “On the contrary, the EU will be strengthened,” – says the analyst and explained, “Great Britain was missing in all the EU integration processes, it was against the Eastern Partnership Program and other processes. Great Britain was missing in the euro zone, the migration policy of this country runs counter to the European one. Also, the UK parliamentarians are in the strongest group of the Euro-skeptics in the European Parliament.” Hence, according to the political analyst, the withdrawal of the UK from the EU will not weaken the structure, but on the contrary, will make it more homogeneous, “Quite positive processes will run.” He also reminds that the UK is not a homogeneous country, it consists of islands, and Great Britain is not European but a Euro-Atlantic country, which significantly affects the whole policy of this country. By the way, this referendum is still not enough for starting the process of withdrawal from the EU. The British parliament has yet to approve it and then apply to the government for starting the process. The Constitution of this country allows holding one more referendum on the same issues. Stepan Grigoryan believes that the Parliament of such a democratic country cannot but consider the expression of will of its own people.

Note that last, year, in Scotland, the referendum failed only because the UK was an EU member. Stepan Grigoryan argues that Scotland and Northern Ireland will be separated from this country if the UK commences the process of its withdrawal from the EU. To the observation that therewith, the UK’s split will commence, the political analyst responded, “It is up to them. Importantly that recovery process begins in the EU, as often the UK was hampering the EU activities in various matters. The EU migration policy and its current result are caused by the UK policy. Do you remember the EU-UK long-running talks on a number of key matters regarding the EU policy, and the EU decided to make concessions? The policy of the UK on a number of matters hit the EU. As said in a popular language, now, the “troublemakers” are leaving.”
