Goris declared as CIS Cultural Capital for 2018

April 25,2017 13:08

The Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) has decided to endorse a draft decision declaring the Armenian city of Goris as the CIS Cultural Capital for 2018. The decision came as a result of the efforts made by the COMUS program, a joint program of the Council of Europe and the European Union. The proposal was drafted by COMUS Goris, with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Armenia, and an action plan for a series of local and national events in 2018 is now being drawn up.

COMUS Goris recently reported on the results of the project and on progress made by a selection of heritage-led projects implemented by the Government of Armenia. The local projects receive technical support from COMUS experts, together with thought leadership and practical ideas for paving a way for future community-led development in small historical towns.

Another COMUS pilot town – the Armenian town of Gyumri – was named as the CIS Cultural Capital in 2013.
