Monitors: Georgia making ‘considerable and consistent’ progress, but some items still to be dealt with

July 06,2017 16:08

Georgia has made “considerable and consistent” progress over the last decade in honouring its promises to the Council of Europe, efforts which should be “rightfully recognised”, but a number of items remain to be addressed, including with regard to the independence of the judiciary, PACE monitors have said.

Reporting on a three-day fact-finding visit to Tbilisi (28-30 March 2017), monitoring co-rapporteurs Boriss Cilevics (Latvia, SOC) and Kerstin Lundgren (Sweden, ALDE) reviewed the latest political developments in Georgia, including the recent election and moves to reform the Constitution, and detailed recent efforts to reform the judiciary, modify the surveillance law, repatriate the Meskhetian population and boost media freedom.
