CLOSING THE STREETS IS UNHELPFULL

November 28,2006 00:00

The policemen were saying yesterday to the participants of Civic insubordination movement who were celebrating the first anniversary of the Constitutional referendum by meetings.

Though the initiative group of Civic insubordination movement had called the parties and public organizations which boycotted Constitutional referendum one year ago to take part in the meeting held in front of Constitutional Court, only representatives from “Alternative”, Petros Makeyan and Samson Ghazarian took part in the meeting. And some members of ANM administration followed the meeting for a short time. In answer to our question how one of the initiators of the movement, Vahan Shirkhanian explained the absence of leaders of those parties which boycotted the referendum said: “Maybe this is one of the illnesses of the political arena, and it is very dangerous. As the initiators are other people, and their participation seems to be secondary, which is wrong. The falsification of the referendum is everybody\’s problem, and more people must take part in the meeting today. It\’s a pity.”
We should mention that we saw among some hundreds of demonstrators both “Republic” party and PPA members. PPA speaker Ruzan Khachatrian stressed just on the last circumstance. When we were interested why the party didn\’t participate in that meeting: “There are a lot of PPA members here, and our politicians take part in the special sitting”.
Secretary of “Justice”group Grigor Haroutiunian spoke about the referendum in his speech yesterday declaring: “Nowadays authorities, the political coalition drew figures a year ago.”
And the demonstrators addressed their calls to the CC members. It was said in the summon: “Right in front of you, the results of constitutional referendum were rigged by Robert Kocharian\’s order on November 27, 2005. Whom that failed constitution does belong to? Which constitution are you for? Don\’t you see that your activities have become meaningless.”
The citizens who were deprived of their properties were the most active participants of this meeting. They armed with brooms, which were the symbols of Civic insubordination movement. Head of “Victims for state needs” public organization Sedrak Baghdasarian speaking about the affirmations as if their problems are manipulated by political forces said to “Aravot”: “We are thankful to those parties which have joined us today and defend our interests. I\’m surprised that the representatives of the coalition don\’t come.”
The demonstrators moved to the parliament after CC with the same slogans and summons. First of all they tried to close the street but the policemen asked them to walk on terrace. The policemen were assuring: “Closing the street is unhelpful”.
