RA POLICEMEN PREPARE FOR THE ELECTIONS

February 01,2007 00:00

This time they have a long-term mission.

The forthcoming RA parliamentary elections on May 12 have enlivened the law enforcement services of Armenia. The Armenian policemen are preparing for those elections. The point is that lieutenant general; RA chief of police Hayk Haroutiunian has ordered to strengthen the regime of work in all regions and communities of the republic within May 5-30. According to our sources, the RA authorities, including the RA chief of police, feel anxiety that the situation in the country will be troubled after the elections. The opposition may organize actions of protest against irregularities in the elections. The Armenian policemen have also taken seriously the announcements of those oppositionists that the NA elections may be a proper opportunity to hold a democratic revolution or for changeover of political powers in the country. At the same time, the Armenian policemen worry about the possible developments that people may come from regions to Yerevan by the opposition’s summons as it used to be in the previous years. The point of anxiety in this context is that it will be difficult to prevent people’s mass movement from regions to the capital because the RA police has no right any more to have the posts of roadworthiness inspection in the streets. The inspectors will be “traveling”. Some oppositionists think that this new order won’t prevent the policemen to stop any doubtful bas or car.

The RA police also worry about the fact that the item about making 15-day administrative arrest has been removed from “The Code on Administrative Infringements” as a result of demands of international instances. It becomes clear that the policemen aren’t finally disappointed for preventing encroachments against “public order”. According to our information, the RA police have launched special trainings “how to neutralize aggressive crowd”.

Certainly, we should say in favor of justice that the police are going to prevent not only the actions of protest of the opposition but the authority parties, too.

The RA chief of police has ordered Hayk Militonian, the chief of general department of criminal investigation at the RA Police to collect personal information about those citizens of Yerevan and regions who are the members of RPA,  “Prosperous Armenia”, “Republic”, “Alliance” Parties, as well as Jirayr Seyfilian’s formed  “In favor of defense of liberated territories” and “Unification of Armenian Volunteers” public initiatives. RA chief of police thinks that serious clashes are possible not only between the opposition and authority but among authority-supported parties, so they must be under control.

According to our sources, the future of RA chief of police Hayk Artyomich’s career depends on his successful work during the forthcoming elections.
