IMPEACHMENT AS A LITMUS PAPER

March 05,2007 00:00

The second meeting organized by “Alternative” public initiative yesterday marked that initiative in that way.

Former Yerevan mayor Vahagn Khachatryan told that all TV Companies had refused of broadcasting their 20-second lasted chargeable reel, which was telling about the meeting. The participants of the meeting were fewer than they were in the previous meeting, held on February 20. Nikol Pashinyan, the editor-in-chief of “Haykakan Jamanak” daily, said on that occasion: “Mustard seed is the smallest of seeds but it gives such long branches on which birds trill. We are few today, as we sow.” Ashot Sargsyan made an announcement reminding that “Aletrnative” had proposed a united project round the impeachment problem during the previous meeting and no opposition force objected, instead, they welcomed it. But now “Alternative” declares “with deep regret”: “The opposition forces didn’t manage to demonstrate political will, to get rid of ambitions and stereotypes because of personal and inner-party interests and preferred backstage deals with the current regime. That’s why the real chance to get rid of this criminal authority became more difficult. But our initiative wasn’t taken in vain. It discovered and will uncover many of politicians. The current authorities got the best conditions to perform recurrent performance called “elections”.

Aghasy Enokyan, the member of “Alternative”, declared in his speech: “Who is for impeachment, he is for the future of Armenia. The rest are Kocharyan’s adherents”.

Aramazd Ghalmkaryan rebuked most of all that the opposition didn’t unite. He told that he had proposed “Alternative” initiative group to meet those persons and even asked them to unify round the idea of impeachment: “We were summoning the oppositionists to unify and were ready to serve them, to be observers, not to be included in the general proportional list for the opposition arena is united and struggle against the irregularities jointly. What is then? What did our efforts give? I must note with regret that the traditional opposition didn’t listen to the voice of new generation. Though it agreed with our argumentations formally.”

David Matevosyan produced the content of letter about proposals made by “Impeachment” bloc, which must be sent to OSCE monitoring mission and the embassies of OSCE member countries in Armenia. It is proposed to “ International structures which spend money in vain for establishing democracy in Armenia”: “To buy hours in private TV Companies by the part of their money and to give it to various representatives of opposition”. The next proposal is to allocate frequency to “A1+”. And finally “ to follow the electoral process from the beginning to the end, instead of visiting polling stations”.

“Alternative’s” next meeting is in front of Matenadaran, on March 19, at 5 p.m.
