And the opposition didn’t manage to prevent that process.
After publishing the results of parliamentary elections held on May 12, the opposition forces were disappointed not only with the authorities for rigging the elections but with the public, too for its active participation in electoral frauds.
The member of “Republic” Party Suren Surenyants also spoke about this fact.
– How do you mark the results of parliamentary elections?
– It is simply impossible to hold legal elections in authoritarian countries, so the results of those elections aren’t marked: you should either humble or not to humble. But the elections on May 12 make another conclusion. Irrespective of the authorities’ irregularities, it is obvious that our society has at least loyal attitudes towards the criminal system, which is formed I the country. Unfortunately, we should register that the civil society has defeated, and the real policy has yielded its position to money, power, nationalism and populism.
– What role does the opposition play in this remark?
– The opposition has a global omission, which is obvious. The authority was trying to degradate the public because it was the shortest way for its reproduction. The problem of the opposition should be the prevention of the public degradation. We should admit tat the opposition didn\’t solve that problem as it didn\’t manage to form the ideological, political alternative which would unify the public not only round justice but round civil conciousness, too. It seemed to the opposition that the mechanical units would make the authorities yield. In reality, only the citizen can win the authority by his realized orientation and value system.
– What connection do the people\’s bad social conditions have?
– The Armenian people won the war in bad social-economic conditions and maintained their dignity. People were praying for their sons, husbands, brothers and victory. That kind of behaivor provided our victory in the war.
– What was changed then?
– I think that first of all people with a unique way of has been ruling us since 1998, and they managed to oblige that way of thinking on the public, too. Second, no political force was formed opposing to that way of thinking: no corresponding institutional basis was formed and the political ideas are very virtual and amorphous. The opposition should try to show the core problem to the people of liberal values having a concrete political model. Unfortunately that didn\’t happen till May 2, and the unit of three political forces was mechanical. They were holding demonstrations, complaining of the authorities but don’t offer the people any prospect of development.
– While the opposition forces were claiming that the 90 percent of the population was oppositionist and don’t recognize the current authorities. Where are those 90 percents?
– 90 percent of our population has an oppositionist behavior and that behavior wasn’t represented by objective reasons. The voters don\’t have prospects of changes, resources of faith at. Maybe our society need in changes but it is very objective for them. If you don\’t offer any objective model, the electoral bribes become objective for them.
– The new elections are coming. What can the opposition offer to the same public?
– The current opposition must remark what happened on May 12 very realistically and build a new policy. As we haven\’t understood yet that we should create a center of real alternative; the public will always mark the power, money. So we can\’t compete with them. They should get rid of party selfishness and self-liquidated become a new joint liberal party. Be sure, no special way of thinking and no irregularities won\’t help the authority.
– The opposition called the participants of the meeting to gather next Friday though it was promising permanent referendums declaring that they wouldn\’t go home until the president\’s impeachment. Why?
– The demonstration on April 13 had an inertial character as we recorded what the public had already known. Holding demonstrations isn\’t an end in itself. We should serve a true alternative to the public and the political project by which we can overcome this situation.
