NO FREEDOM IN MEGHRY

July 14,2007 00:00

PPA secretary from Meghry town Grigor Harutiunyan is sure
that the public expects changes.

PPA Secretary, former NA Parliamentarian Grigor Harutiunyan nowadays is in his native homeland Meghry and informed us that the Meghry population can\’t understand what happened during the parliamentary elections. In Grigor Harutiunyan\’s words, the Meghry dwellers: “are astonished at the “professionally” organized elections. As a result, people don\’ have any hope that they may be a factor, the same as it is in Yerevan.”
Grigor Harutiunyan thinks that people, anyway, cherish hopes that the changes are possible: “Those who are interested in policy in Meghry, think that the opposition shouldn\’t participate in the presidential elections separately. Irrespective of the results of the parliamentary elections, the authorities aren\’t so confident, that\’s why they tried to close “Azatutiun” b/s. At the same time the authorities are apprehended and close the freedom of expression before presidential elections as hey did in 2003 closing “A1+”. The citizens of Meghry are deprived of fresh information especially by wireless. They only watch Public TV, ALM (Karapetich) and H2, there is also a cable channel, which is not available for everyone”.
In Mr. Harutiunyan\’s opinion, the citizens of Meghry are interested in Karabakh conflict as much as they are interested in Meghry problem: “The apprehension always exists, but the external and internal pressures made the authorities to ignore Meghry Problem. And nowadays Meghry has become a serious center of investments. The number of mining is increased; there are several fronts which are seriously exploited. I don\’t think that our republic must direct its strategy only to mining industry, and we should be very careful. The authorities think that they curry out right policy here.” In answer to our observation that the process creates a lot of employments, Grigor Harutiunyan noticed: “The employments are very important but before creating it, you should be careful about the villages. Especially this kind of exploitation causes environmental problems in the near future. Taking into consideration that Agaraks copper mine is an open one, gold is exported from three regions and the whole region intends to become a mine. And this is a dangerous intention”. Grigor Harutiunyan also added: “We should not allow devastation of villages, we should save the villages”.
