There are positions to be assigned in the Police system but the possible candidates don\’t want to hold it.
The profession of a policeman has been considered a prestigious one since the Soviet period but not for the reason that the public respects and trusts in the policemen but just for the reason that position allows its holders to rule or punish common people in the name of law or state. That profession in independent Armenia is considered as the synonym of support or good life. But it seems something has been changed during the last six months. For example, there are key positions in the police which should be assigned; the position of deputy chief of police Hovhannes Varyan who was dismissed on June 11 and the new assignment should be made within 60 days. There are several RPA and PAP candidates who would like to fill that position, among them are Rubik Stepanyan, chief of regional department of Kotayk Police, Alexander Afyan, deputy chief of Yerevan Police. But since the RA President signs that assignment, and the PAP and RPA leaders can\’t give serious grounds for their preferred candidacies that assignment is being delayed. It is not also excluded that the above mentioned position may be removed.
There are other positions which should be assigned as in Yerevan as well as in different regions of Armenia. According to our sources the reason of such situation is not the lack of human resources but the fact that the candidates themselves refuse of holding that position because of the upcoming presidential elections. Since the political developments have been changed, and it is not clear whether the current authority will remain or the political forces will be changed, careful policemen don\’t want to have any connection with Robert Kocharyan and Serge Sargsyan yet.
Our sources also inform that the political orientation inside the police is discrepant. The part of policemen intends to defend the opposition leading by Levon Ter-Petrosyan. Their decision depends on decisiveness and strength of the opposition\’s movement.
