THE FREEDOM SQUARE IS STILL OCCUPIED

May 30,2008 00:00

The RA law enforcement bodies do not allow the citizens with the oppositionist view to walk in the Freedom Square for about 3 months.

The Freedom Square which our police decided to clean up from the people who were struggling for their constitutional right is still occupied by law enforcement bodies. It is allowed to hold the parade on the day of Serge Sargsyan\’s inauguration, to allow one of the coalition members to organize mass events in the Freedom Square on April 23, it was allowed to hold a concert in that square but those people who haven\’t changed their opinion regarding the presidential elections on February 19 are not allowed to gather there. The Freedom Square is closed for the All People Movement even if its participants want to visit the monument of the Genocide victims in organized way moving from the Freedom Square, especially when the representatives of «Nikol Aghbalyan» students\’ organization was allowed to do that.

How do the authorities who speak about dialogues all day long decide who is allowed to enter the Freedom Square and who is not; there is no official announcement or list regarding those limitations.

It is the third time when Serge Sargsyan\’s authority does not allow the representatives of the opposition or opponents who do not share the authorities\’ standpoint to enter the Freedom Square. Those who dared enter thee square were punished and beaten by famous policemen and few of them were brought to the police station.

The third illegal obstacle the oppositionists faced on May 28 when the policemen surrounded the Freedom Square and did not allow the oppositionists to enter there. But the policemen\’s actions which last about 3 months don\’t have any legal explanation. We asked Press Secretary of the RA Chief of Police Sayad Shirinyan to give explanations regarding the policemen\’s activities. Mr. Shirinyan who was answering to “Aravot’s” question without any objections asked us to write a letter to receive the answers of the interested questions. We followed his instructions wrote a letter of questions realizing that we will have to wait for few days for receiving the answers.

Our questions were as follows: who did order the policemen to surround the Freedom Square forbidding the people to enter there, and which was the legal ground of that order, which subunit of the police committed that order and who is responsible for banning RA citizens’ constitutional right of basic freedoms.

We hope that the ores speaker will try to give reasonable answers to the above-noted questions.
