“Another bluff of the government”

March 17,2011 00:00

Answering “Aravot’s” question that the continuing repressions against the ANC activists, particularly Samson Khachatryan’s case are not understood in the context of president Sargsyan’s gestures of reverence towards the opposition and the promises of reforming the legal system. “Is this a sanitary cleansing before the March 17 rally?” the human rights activist Vardan Harutyunyan said, “Samson Khachatryan’s arrest, keeping the political prisoners in prisons, taking in the oppositionists both in the regions and in Yerevan by the police and forcing them not to take part in the upcoming rally prove that these gestures are an organized game or another bluff. This government will continue its work as it started. They do not know another way to keep their offices except for violence. They have undertaken one task for three years to diminish the opposition in Armenia, to shut the political oppositionists up with prisons and violence, to do everything in order to prevent the people from getting out and protesting. As one of the ways of achieving that, they consider violence and spreading of terror. They just cannot understand that they have been living in 21st century for quite a long time, that the methods they use for struggling against the opposition and dissidence are not contemporary anymore, are not appropriate anymore and will not work in the modern times. Even the developments in the Arabic world cannot prompt anything to them.”
