Is there anyone who will try “to upset”?

June 02,2011 00:00

Nobody is trying “haramel” (to upset; the word put into use by first president on March 31) the warm-friendly relations between the opposition and the government yet

After the latest rally of the ANC, when Levon Ter-Petrossian explicitly and clearly stated that let nobody not even try “to upset” the started dialogue between the opposition and the government, a new weird situation, when both the top people know what they are doing and the opposition knows what it is doing, and all the others are jointly waiting for what these two will decide and what they will reach. Judging from the situation that exists in our country we can say that now we will give lessons of a real democracy to the Europeans and the others; it is appropriate to use the following proverb here, “The Armenian’s last mind”. Surely, no such thing may occur to any European or American that the walls of misunderstanding can be so easily destroyed, one just needs a current president and a founding president of the country to be familiar with chess.

Since yesterday, the political forces in Armenia have been discussing what Levon Ter-Petrossian said, and at the same time, the president of the republic takes part in the event dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the Italian unification in Rome. The unifications were justified in the course of history. And if the opposition and the government will manage to unite, a really unprecedented situation will occur, when some will be just shocked and will speculate confusedly, “If I go to the right, our people are there, if I go to the left, our people are there.” Yesterday the NA Speaker Hovik Abrahamyan during a conversation with journalists stated that he thought the ANC leader Levon Ter-Petrossian’s statement that the opposition is ready for the dialogue with the government should be welcomed. In the NA Speaker’s opinion, “It should be very welcomed that the fundamental opposition makes such an offer to the government. In my opinion, the president of the republic will go for that move and they will arrange that dialogue that, I am convinced, will certainly be in the interest of the Republic of Armenia and the people.”

In response to the question on what principle the government is going to form the negotiating delegation with the opposition, whether only the Republicans will be included in that, or the delegation will be formed based on the coalition memorandum, i.e. the RLP and the PAP will also participate, Hovik Abrahamyan hardly answered and only said that “it is up to the president of the country to decide, the president will decide. We have not discussed that format yet, but it will be known soon.” And just there, after that answer of Hovik Abrahmayan’s, there was no doubt left that many unprecedented developments were yet to come, that it was quite realistic that the government and the opposition would  sit at a round table, drink a cup of coffee, make jokes and at the same time solve the issues of the country and the people. Certainly, the world has not seen and will not see such a thing.

Probably this was what some figures meant at the time, when facing any tense situation they continuously spoke of the Armenian version. Maybe this is the Armenian version. The deputy chairman of the RPA, an NA MP Razmik Zohrabyan answering “Aravot’s” questions yesterday welcomed the offer to have a dialogue with the opposition, however he explicitly denied that the president of the country will agree on holding a pre-term election. According to our interlocutor, the dialogue with the opposition is possible; however, “I rule out that President Serzh Sargsyan will agree on the pre-term election to take place. Whereas there is no need for that, since the coalition has already announced that it will support president Serzh Sargsyan’s candidacy, as a joint candidate, during the 2013 presidential election. I.e. we see the presidential election in 2013 and the parliamentary election in 2012, in their time. The time will come and those elections will be held, according to the Constitution.” Mr. Zohrabyan did not accept the ideas voiced at the ANC rally that since the elections had been rigged and not legitimate, then it is necessary that the new elections were held pre-term and not rigged.

In the opinion of the Republican MP, there is no such issue and the people who raise an issue of legitimacy are distorting the reality. “Instead of making such statements the opposition must show good will and commonsense and accept that the elections were legitimate; certainly I do not deny that there were some drawbacks. One must have courage and patience, wait for year 2012, and then participate in the parliamentary, and in 2013 in the presidential elections. Who is elected, is elected. It is the right way.”
