“He is the daddy”

The logic of the developments among the establishment, according to Union of National Self-Determination Party (UNSDP) leader Paruyr Hayrikyan

“UNSDP doesn’t stop its activities for the sake of the Republican Party of Armenia (RPA)”, stated UNSDP leader Paruyr Hayrikyan yesterday. According to Hayrikyan, that statement immediately spread among politics and in the mass media was a deliberate distortion of his ideas. He clarifies that he actually said that UNSDP is ready for cooperation with any party, including RPA, if the party accepts the model of perfect democracy presented by them. UNSDP leader realizes who and on what purpose distorted his saying, however he thinks it is a small and empty thing to speak of. Hayrikyan intends to reestablish the National United Party (NUP) and if home parties continue doing political business, Hayrikyan will initiate the National United Party political movement. By the way, NUP leadership led by Hayrikyan had a meeting in the Armenian National Congress (ANC) offices where representatives of various ANC organizations were present. UNSDP were met and received by Levon Zurabyan “very enthusiastically and warmly”. The UNSDP delegates shared their notions of the perfect democracy model put forward by them. Hayrikyan welcomes the positive step of ANC, although, according to him, not all of the meeting participants showed proper attitude toward his new initiative concerning the national leader. In any case, as a result of that meeting, Hayrikyan made it clear for himself, “We deal with people who care for our notions of democracy. Our project is a step that can lay a foundation for future progress – the Armenian will perceive himself the master of the country in that system.” And if ANC accept that and will take a positive step, Hayrikyan is ready to cooperate without any political claims. Furthermore, he thinks that he infected the Congress with that idea, since, according to Hayrikyan, they now say more often that they don’t need power, “However, I am convinced that they will fight each other for places on the MP list. I say from the beginning I don’t put forward that issue. For me being an MP is a very small thing. However, I want to reach 51 percent with my team, in order to be able to cleanse the system and really reform the national life.”

At our request, speaking of the new slogan of the Armenian National Congress, i.e. “toward the regular election”, Hayrikyan said, “We have never received such statements enthusiastically and proposed preparing for the upcoming parliamentary election seriously and practically, I have mentioned the purposes above. I don’t think that ANC have changed their priorities, but I think it doesn’t do any credit to a fighter when the circumstances dictate decisions. It is also an option, but it is a different thing when one has his own way. In that case, one is the master of the situation. When one submits to the situation, one is not far away from becoming an opportunist.” And for the backstage developments among the establishment and the office shifts, as a result of those, Hayrikyan describes those briefly, “The daddy wants to remind everyone that he is the daddy. For example, Serzh Sargsyan opposed the society, in order to appoint Hovik Abrahamyan the Speaker of the National Assembly (NA). It was his right and I welcome that kind of determination on my behalf, but to struggle so ardently for appointing a person the NA Speaker, then discharge him so easily, there is something in it. So he says I am the master, guys, you should know that there is only one boss in this game and that’s me.” My interlocutor has no doubts that the upcoming parliamentary election won’t be an election in the European sense of that word, but only an event called an election. Moreover, he says that the process of using the financial and administrative resources has commenced, i.e. organization of youth events where the name of the political party is also mentioned. Therefore, he thinks that he should form a team that can get at least 80 percent, in order to have and maintain the 51 percent he longs for. “Today the government leverage guarantees 25-30 percent without any serious effort. RPA itself has 5 percent. The rest they will get, in accordance with the work style common in Armenia, even if there are controversies among the establishment. The past election showed that all the people who long for power in Armenia want to have 50 percent and more, meanwhile the multiparty election rules out that a certain party will get more than 35 percent of the votes. None of the seven colors of the rainbow can be more than the other. 50 and more percent can be achieved only in case of a big alliance”, says Hayrikyan, being convinced that he puts forward a very high value and hopes all things that seem beneficial at first sight will pale beside it, and it will offer an opportunity for success.
