In a few years it will be a serious problem to find a bride in our country – boys are born more often, than girls. This was said by Garik Hayraperyan, the representative of the Armenian offices of the UN Population Fund, today during a meeting with journalists at “Henaran” (support) club.
The UN specialist, referring to the national statistical data, said that only 1400 baby girls were born in Armenia at present, nevertheless, the majority of our society prefers six times more baby boys, than girls, “Since 1993 the proportion of sexes among the newly-born has been 110-120 boys to 100 girls. Whereas the biologically normal proportion is 102-106 boys to 100 girls.” According to Garik Hayrapetyan, this sexual imbalance will affect negatively the demography of our country, which is in bad condition, as it is.
Garik Hayrapetyan thinks that the sexual imbalance between the girls and boys is a result of abortions related to sex, “This is a process, one should not look for the guilty, this is a result of the clash between the traditional and high-tech thinking.”
Obstetrician-gynecologist Razmik Abrahamyan, the director of the Republican Institute on Reproductive Health, Perinatology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, present at the press conference, put forward the results of a research. According to Mr. Abrahamyan’s data, it was revealed out of a quiz among 420 women that admittedly, they have seen the doctor to find out the baby’s sex, but only 5 percent of them have applied for aborting pregnancy because of sex. The other 95 percent continued their pregnancy regardless of sex. By the way, according to the doctor, the abortions because of the undesired sex take place after the third child as a rule, the sex doesn’t matter for the parents in case of the first child. 83 percent of women who applied for abortion said that the abortion of pregnancy because of sex was not made by the wish of the mother-in-law or husband, but by their own will.
Razmik Abrahamyan has noticed one positive tendency, i.e. today the majority of women has started to have children in the favorable age for reproduction, from 19 to 35, which is, according to the doctor, very important for healthy motherhood.
