Will Russia support Azerbaijan in 2012?

December 23,2011 12:44

“Next year it is possible that only Russia out of the Minsk Group co-chair countries will change its position on the peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict”, said Richard Giragosian, the director of the Armenian Center for National and International Studies during a press conference at “Henaran” (support) club today. He explained this prediction of his by the fact that Russia has normalized relations with Azerbaijan for the past 2 years and has started military cooperation, “Russians may seize the opportunity that Armenia underestimates its value for Russia and overestimates Russia’s value.”

According to the expert, Turkey will be more willing to normalize the Armenian-Turkish relations next year, because, according to him, Turks pay for not being fair with Armenia, “That price became clear after passing a bill banning the denial of the Armenian Genocide at the French parliament yesterday.”

Mr. Girgosian positively assessed Armenia’s foreign policy, mentioning that they were more powerful this year than in the previous years, “This year Armenia’s foreign policy is more powerful than Turkey’s foreign policy. It is also caused by the fact that EU and America support Armenia’s position. The International community has put Turkey under great pressure and the expectations from Turkey are bigger.”

Referring to Armenia’s domestic policy, the expert said that the political stage needed a dialogue, but not between people, but between political sides, “Dialogue should be raised to the level of politics. There is a conflict in the political elite in Armenia, the conflict between the Prosperous Armenia Party (PAP) and the Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) is real and it is not for distracting people’s attention at all. The main question is why hasn’t PAP counterattacked RPA yet?”
