Is a precedent of suing mass media for readers’ comments being established?

January 13,2012 18:04

Today a session on a lawsuit against “Hraparak” (square) daily newspaper for insulting counselor Artur Grigoryan’s honor, dignity and business reputation took place in the trial court of Kentron and Nork-Marash administrative districts.

Let us remind that Artur Grigoryan was insulted with the comments made by readers under the article put on the website of the newspaper, hraparak.am, on August 10, 2011.

The newspaper’s counselor Gevorg Gevorgyan said during a conversation with Aravot.am that the judge had denied their petition during the preliminary investigation to make an exception and deprive the newspaper of a necessity to prove their innocence of insulting A. Grigoryan, “We asked for an exception, because the counselor was insulted not with the publication of the newspaper, but with the readers’ comments made under the article on the website.”

The counselor suspects that a precedent of suing mass media for readers’ comments may be established. Tigran Atanesyan, the counselor of the petitioner, said during a conversation with us that he had nothing to say about the preliminary trial. Trial date was set for February 24.
