Levon Zurabyan, “We did not pin our hopes on the observers to be disappointed”

January 19,2012 21:08

Carel Hofstra, the acting head of the OSCE Yerevan Office, answering questions of journalists during a press conference today, said that almost surely 2000 observers would not come toArmenia, there would be a few hundreds of them, as many as during previous elections. Since the opposition, in particular, Armenian National Congress coordinator Levon Zurabyan, offered to invite 2000 observers, Aravot.am asked him whether they were disappointed that there wouldn’t be as many observers as they had expected. In his words, “Such things cannot disappoint us. We did not pin our hopes on the observers to be disappointed, we pin our hopes exceptionally on our people.” Mr. Zurabyan thinks if few observers come, “it will contradict the resolution of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, where they called for organizing full-scale monitoring mission. Anyway, it is a thing that if they wanted to helpArmeniaand now they don’t, we won’t make a tragedy out of it.”

In response to our question “what do you think, will €1.7 million serve their purpose”, Levon Zurabyan said, “I don’t know about the amount of money last time, but their mission served quite the opposite purpose to legitimize the regime established by the authorities. This time we hope they will learn a lesson.”
