It is known that the officers of the Police Main Department of Fight Against Organized Crime arrested resident of the village of Marmarashen Artashes Mkoyan, the dean of the Pedagogical Faculty of the Gyumri Pedagogical Institute. Law-enforcers suspected 70-year-old PhD in philosophy of cutting a deal with a distance learning student from Armavir, who had not attended classes, to give him grades for exams and tests and of demanding 150 thousand AMD and taking them.
They have released the dean today, changing his measure of restraint to release on his own recognizance.
Let us mention that Vardevan Grigoryan, the rector of the Gyumri Pedagogical Institute, said during a conversation with Aravot.am yesterday, characterizing the dean, “I frankly didn’t expect that from Artashes Mkoyan. You may ask both students and professors, a lot of people think highly of him. He has been working at this institute for 45 years, he graduated from this college, matured here, defended his doctoral dissertation only 4-5 years ago. He has grown up as an orphan – his father fought in the war and did not return, his mother took care of him. He has a wonderful family, he is a very educated man, although all this doesn’t mean that he should have taken that step. I am sorry for him, as a friend, and first of all for the reputation of the institute, I am also sorry for him, as a man, also for his family.”
It is not clear yet whether the dean will hold the office or not. The preliminary investigation is in progress. The doors of both the pedagogical faculty dean’s office and the history and philology faculty dean’s office are taped. And that means that the police are not finished with the institute yet.
We have been to the college, although the staff was in an extremely bad mood, but the classes at the college continue from today forward.
