This morning, a 2.4-magnitude earthquake hit the town of Artashat. This was the third earthquake in our republic within the last week. The first one hit the town of Masis on February 7 and registered 2.8 magnitudes that also shook the capital. On February 10 a 2.7-magnitude earthquake hit the town of Aparan. The February 7 earthquake in the town of Masis registered 3 magnitudes in the capital.
Such frequency of earthquakes has raised concerns among the people – they are worried that higher-magnitude earthquakes await them.
“There is no reason for concerns,” Hrachya Petrosyan, the head of the national seismic security agency, Ministry of Emergency Situations, appeased during a conversation with Aravot.am. He assures that such minor earthquakes are characteristic of Armenia. Mr. Petrosyan says that such seismic activity appears in Armenia almost every year.
In response to our question what was the reason for such frequency of earthquakes, the head of the agency said that since Armenia was located in the seismic zone, such frequency of earthquakes was not unusual at all and one shouldn’t be afraid and that the earthquakes are caused by the activity in the Earth’s interior.
