Citizens of Armenia will have two passports, one of which will be electronic, in the short run. Hrayr Tovmasyan, the Minister of Justice, spoke of this during a conversation with journalists today, informing that one of the passports would be valid abroad and the other in Armenia, “Identification cards, along with those passports, will be in effect inside the country; it is an ordinary practice, it is common around the world to have two passports and an identification card.”
The minister said that a citizen would get new passports for free or for 1000 AMD.
As for identification cards, citizens will have them starting January 1. They are intended not for this, but for the next election, “They are intended for all the other elections, including the presidential election. They will rule out double voting and the possibility of voting on behalf of someone else.”
