Ashot Zakaryan, the former manager of the Shirak office of the UYV and the Armenian National Congress coordinator of Gyumri, said during a conversation with Aravot.am today that however much the UYV members respected their chairman, General Manvel Grigoryan, everyone there had his own political position and approach, therefore, the general’s statement on endorsing Serzh Sargsyan could not be crucial in the political processes. “The congress doesn’t express the position of all freedom fighters of the Republic of Armenia and I think that the general’s statement cannot be of essential importance in the political processes. A lot of yerkrapahs support this or that political force. Let’s take me, for instance; however much I respect general’s words, I stick to my convictions,” said Mr. Zakaryan.
In response to our questions whether what general said went and whether he couldn’t unite everyone with his reputation at least in this issue, Colonel Zakaryan said, “The issue here is not your interlocutor’s reputation or the importance of his words; the issue here is people’s convictions. I know a set of commanders in the ranks of the UYV who have quite a different stance.”
By the way, our interlocutor informed that he hadn’t participated in the 9th congress of the UYV, since he had had the status of neither a delegate nor a guest. He also explained that having the status of a delegate was necessary to participate and delegates were elected during meetings in the local offices, otherwise it was possible to participate in the status of a guest, as Serzh Sargsyan did. According to Ashot Zakaryan’s facts, no oppositionist member of the UYV from the region of Shirak participated in the congress.
“I heard of the UYV congress from the press, although let me say I don’t attach too much importance to that, since I have much more important things to deal with now, than going to a congress,” said the former manager of the UYV. In response to a question what important things he was talking about, our interlocutor said, “To form a legitimate government in Armenia as soon as possible, there are much more serious problems to solve in this country, than going to a congress.”
