February 27,2012 14:49

“There are a lot of problems in the field of science in Armenia. 5 000 out of 27 000 scientific workers have left,” PhD in math and physics, Professor Artur Ishkhanyan, a corresponding member of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia, said during a meeting with journalists at Golden Tulip hotel today. The scientist is concerned that we can lose the scientific position and traditions gained by Armenia over the years. He reasserted that there were many problems – e.g., troubles with importing devices and equipment and clearing customs, low wages of scientists.

In Mr. Ishkhanyan’s opinion, the government doesn’t take steps and doesn’t promote the development of science, “The government states that science is the potential of the country and yet what they do doesn’t correspond to what they say.”

Tigran Harutyunyan, a member of a Facebook group called We Demand Increasing the Funding of Science, stated that 100 million AMD given by the president of the Republic of Armenia would be spent on organizing and participating in conferences in Armenia and abroad, supporting scientific projects and granting awards named after famous Armenian scientists.

Hayk Ishkhanyan, a bachelor of the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, stated during a meeting with journalists that he wanted journalists to be present at the meetings of the National Academy of Sciences council, the meeting to be filmed and shown, in order that it was clear who was who.

Artur Ishkhanyan demanded from the government to increase funding of science and to efficiently supervise it, also to support private individuals.
