“It is better to stand by a booth owner’s side, rather than to state once or twice a week that one is going for a power change and not to do that,” Ruben Hakobyan, the deputy chairman of the Heritage Party executive committee, presented their role on the political stage at Post Scriptum Club today, summarizing their congress. In response to a question of www.aravot.am whether that comparison had been with the Armenian National Congress (ANC) and whether it was the direct influence of the Free Democrats, Mr. Hakobyan said, “No, we didn’t mean the ANC. I am talking about the phenomenon, there are many indirect calls for a power change from within the establishment too. One shouldn’t lead it only in one direction. I was talking about realpolitik, since at the end of the day, our society should consider political forces first of all from the practical perspective. If at the moment, protection of one person’s right is more real, than making elevated speeches for stealing the people’s political emotions, in order that they yield more votes and sometimes they do, we will choose protection of that one individual’s right. If it is necessary to close the Gyumri road or to go and conduct a rally for APPA (mandatory insurance) in the cold, if our woman MPs had to close that road in -20 degrees, in order that they were able to express their protest, we are for doing that, rather than sitting here in warmth and saying that a change of power will happen in a week.”
Faction leader Styopa Safaryan assured that other parties, besides the ANC, had called for a change of power.
The Heritage Party haven’t decided yet in what format they will participate in the election, along with the Free Democrats. In Ruben Hakobyan’s words, “In order that there is no misunderstanding, in order that speculative scenarios are not put forward, we have been systematically worked with the Heritage Party for quite a long time, in order that we are able to form one common entity, which will be based on ideological and political approaches. It is not a pre-election alliance or bloc, as you might say.” In response to an observation of journalists that Raffi Hohannisyan hadn’t ruled out that Khachatur Kokobelyan might lead the list, Styopa Safaryan said, “Mr. Hovhannisyan didn’t rule out anything, because nothing is clear.”
Mr. Hakobyan also noted that it was clear from the past experience that alliances were formed out of circumstances and they split after elections. However, the Heritage Party, along with the Free Democrats Party, wants to lay a foundation of one complete political unit for the society.
