Environmentalists have gathered outside the Government House at the moment demanding to dismantle the booths in Mashtots Park. Besides demanding dismantlement of the booths, they are demanding from the Cabinet and the Chief of Police of the Republic of Armenia to punish police officers that prevented their peaceful rally. Let us remind that police officers destroyed the tent put up by activists in Mashtots Park late yesterday evening.
“We have another clear demand that refers to illegal actions of the police. The police infringed our constitutional right in the evening and forbad our peaceful rally. We put forward our demand to punish all police officers that violate the Constitution of Armenia. We find it an unconstitutional move,” stated one of the activists, Apres Zohrabyan. During the Cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan also talked about the booths, stating that they were interested in coming to a peaceful solution of the issue with opponents, “We are against permanent booths, those pavilions will not be permanent. A question was asked during a meeting with architects for how long those booths would be – three years at most.” According to the Prime Minister, as Mayor Taron Margaryan kept his first promise – to clean Abovyan St. of booths – so will he keep the second promise – the booths set up in the park will be dismantled in three years, “He will dismantle. We respect our opponents’ opinion and I think the solution we offer should put a period to the dialogue. It is an acceptable solution for residents of Yerevan. We should take into consideration not only the interests of residents of Yerevan, but also those of owners of the booths.”
He also said that rules for construction in Little Yerevan would be stricter from now on. Additional regulations have been made, which will forbid construction of apartment houses in downtown Yerevan and will preserve the old buildings.
