The Umbrellas Have Been Removed, as a Result of Clashes With Police Officers

March 28,2012 18:34

The Justice and Rights NGO has been implementing the social movement for protecting the right to vote called Vote Is Power since March 16 in 5 regions of the republic – Lori, Shirak, Tavush, Armavir, Ararat and the city of Yerevan – which has been assisted by the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF) and which has been supported by around 7000 citizens so far.

“The movement aims at achieving the people’s rule through exercising the right to vote, in order that every man, every citizen may understand that his/her vote is not for sale, s/he is the master of his/her vote,” Artak Aghbalyan, the coordinator of the movement said.

Although the Freedom of Rallies Act regulates the procedure of putting up umbrellas and tables unclearly and with general definitions, they had applied to the respective city halls before the action to get a permission to put up umbrellas and tables in the towns.

“Naturally, they couldn’t refuse, but only city halls of  Ijevan and Vanadzor have given permission by decisions made within the prescribed time limit so far,” Artak Aghbalyan informed, adding that in Gyumri and in the city of  Yerevan, clashes with police officers had been unavoidable, “As a result, the umbrellas have been removed, only tables have been left, whereas we long for a free and fair election without election fraud and election bribery.”
