Today, during the second plenary meeting of the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly in Baku, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev made a speech. Naira Zohrabyan, the head of the Armenian delegation, assessed the speech during a conversation with www.aravot.am as “a speech that has crossed any limits of politeness, measure and ethics.” According to MS. Zohrabyan, the Azerbaijani President “dedicated” a considerable part of his speech to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. “Besides their permanent propaganda ‘bla-bla’ – 20% lands occupied, one million refugees – Aliyev directly cursed Armenia, blaming Armenia for xenophobia, desecrating graves and he allowed himself many other impolite definitions,” said Ms. Zohrabyan.
The Armenian side has certainly responded to the assessments. Since the first part of the meeting was formal and our representatives didn’t basically have a possibility to respond, therefore, the Armenian side has handed out an open letter to the Euronest delegates and governing body during the meeting that is taking place now. The document, in which disagreement was expressed with the decision to hold the parliamentary assembly, such an important forum, in Baku and explanations were made, was attached to the letter. Given Aliyev’s speech, the letter reasserts the concerns. The Armenian delegates call on the Euronest leadership to make more rational decisions, while picking up a place for activities of the assembly, the plenary meetings and the commissions, they also urge not to give floor to persons and figures, regardless of their positions, who use such rostra to make xenophobic and misanthropic appeals. The members of the Armenian delegation will talk about the Azerbaijani President’s speech during their oral speeches.
Ms. Zohrabyan informed that the speech had made a very bad impression also on the European Parliament members – they approached our delegates and said that such a speech, such rhetoric and such assessments were unacceptable for them.
