“We are in the administration, we don’t need to be on the list,” Sergey Bagratyan, the governor of Vayots Dzor, explained to www.aravot.am his candidacy withdrawal. He was in the 62nd place on the Prosperous Armenia Party (PAP) list. In response to an observation whether he hadn’t known that he worked in the administration, when he had been included in the list, our interlocutor said, “The political council of our party decided so. Now it is OK. We think that we have things to do in the administration, we, two governors, have decided to do our job.”
The other governor who has withdrawn his candidacy from the PAP list is Nver Poghosyan, the governor of Gegharkunik, who is in the 60th place on the list. Sergey Bagratyan assured that the reason for withdrawals was not a “problem with place.”
Eduard Sharmazanov, the press secretary of the Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) gave the following explanation about the persons, who had withdrawn their candidacies from the RPA list for proportional representation, “People wished so, the party met their wishes.” In response to a question what had changed during these past few days that people had changed their decision, Sharmazanov said, “They doesn’t do what they like. The party has decided so, they had been included in the list, then they expressed their wish and the party met it.” Let us remind that RPA members who have withdrawn their candidacies are Davit Sargsyan, the chief of staff of the Cabinet of the Republic of Armenia, Artem Sargsyan and Armen Baghdasaryan. Let us note that the latter were in the so-called non-winning places on the RPA list for proportional representation.
In the case of Gerasim Alaverdyan, the former Minister of Agriculture, the argument of joint party decision is also made for withdrawing the candidacy from the Rule of Law Party (RLP) list for proportional representation. Both he and the RLP press secretary argued during a conversation with us that it had been a joint decision. Mr. Alaverdyan will be engaged in the party work. Admittedly, it is not clarified at the moment what party work the former Minister of Agriculture has to do. The RLP press secretary also informed that there were other candidacy withdrawals from the RLP list for proportional representation. Those people will work in the electoral commissions during the upcoming election processes.
