Georgi Vanyan who has initiated a festival of Azerbaijani movies in Gyumri in the past two days and Levon Barseghyan, the head of Asparez Club, who agreed to provide premises for that end have become everyone’s target. The president of the Union of Armenian Cinematographers even said, “People like Vanyan have no right to live.” A lot of insulting remarks and threatening statements have been made about Vanyan and Barseghyan. Figures of different caliber in
Gyumri are particularly active in this and scandalous mayor Vardan Ghikasyan is on the crest of a wave, “If I catch Vanyan, I will give him the works,” he said during an interview. www.aravot.am tried to get a clarification from the Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) leadership whether they were not going to call to order their fellow party members. At the end of the day, only a few movies will be shown, is the fuss about it adequate or why didn’t such hysteria arise, when the National Assembly delegation left for Baku to participate in the Euronest Summit? It turns out that the RPA are not so concerned about the latest developments, they are even unaware.
RPA deputy chairman Galust Sahakyan said in response to our question, “I am certainly not informed who said what, but I think such facts are worth condemning.” Sahakyan condemns the politically incorrect attitude, to say the least, of the RPA members, but, “I talk with you now, I talk very politically correctly, but have the same logic in my mind. There are people who are restrained, keep it to themselves, don’t express it and there are people who answer with a bit rude definitions, when the question is asked in a certain manner.”
Sahakyan doesn’t know how the RPA will respond to the statements of its outstanding representative, mayor of Gyumri. Probably, it will not respond in any way.
