In order to understand the phenomenon more clearly, one should look at it from the perspective of laws of nature and history, from the peaceful and broad perspective that only they can make possible. Our history, along with other general facts, has been a terrifying parent for us. It made us be stamped on by barbarians for many centuries. And every live existence that has been stamped on either dies, or is mutilated, becomes bitter and withers. This is the law of nature.
Even the bush of an ordinary cucumber – it is known that if it is stamped on, its fruit is not edible anymore, because it becomes too bitter. That is why they don’t allow you to stamp on its bush. A human being, his soul, heart and mind also become bitter and cruel in the same manner and innermost bitterness comes out, appears in his eyes, as well as on his face, in his words and in his deeds, everywhere, in every field and makes his whole life bitter and cruel. And admittedly, such a life will have many things – “progress,” as well as “culture,” “press,” “literature,” “school” and “charity” – but all that is like the fruit eaten by a worm from inside and usually people suffer from lack, from a common pain, which cannot be cured from outside. Such a life will also yield talented people, but they will also be bitter and cruel. However, it cannot give birth to honest people, kind hearts and elevated spirits – it is the very thing, which makes the life beautiful and attracting and which makes the people dear and likable.
Now, if we have national wisdom, bravery of soul and healthy instincts, we cannot turn the blind eye to our serious disease and cannot but sense that our soul is very bitter, our inner man is very rotten and the first condition for fighting against it and recovering is that we admit both in our hearts and before the rest of the world and realize our misfortune. Afterwards, the lofty wish of self-perfection and honest work will follow that saving perception.
There is no other way – the salvation will be from within, because we are rotten from within.
