“We Should Raise the Issue of Expelling Levon Ter-Petrossian From the Armenian National Congress (ANC),” R. Torosyan Says

May 15,2012 17:23

Ruben Torosyan, the leader of the Human Rights – 96 Party, a member of the ANC, spread a statement on Unprincipled Figures and the Illegal Election. He mentions here that although the 2012 parliamentary election is not over, since the Constitutional Court debates are ahead of us, but some “unprincipled figures have already decided that the election is over… one hands over his parliamentary office to another, another one forms a coalition, the others make assessments of the ‘ended’ election, form National Assembly groups and the Cabinet, throw triumphant parties…” Mentioning lots of electoral violations and unlawful actions, Mr. Torosyan notes, “That treacherous process of legitimizing this unlawful election was started by the first President of the Republic of Armenia who has been neglecting the ANC founding principles for a long time and who, in my opinion, has eventually and easily taken his place next to his dear leader of the National Democratic Union (NDU).” Addressing first President of the Republic of Armenia Levon Ter-Petrossian, R. Torosyan states, “If you couldn’t, you shouldn’t have struggled, not to mention, by dancing.” www.aravot.am inquired from Mr. Torosyan whether he had decided to leave the ANC too. He responded, “I am not leaving the Congress.” We inquired how he

treated those who left the Congress. Mr. Torosyan responded, “Leaving the ANC is not the right way to solve my issue. Perhaps it is the right way to solve theirs.” We asked him to also comment on the part of the statement that referred to the first President of the Republic of Armenia. R. Torosyan got angry, “It is really a betrayal of principles and the right to vote of our society, since when there are no final results, there is the Constitutional Court, which is the most important stage, you state that you accept the results.” In response to our question whether Mr. Torosyan’s staying in the ANC wasn’t controversial, the interlocutor of www.aravot.am said, “Why so? Are we gathered in the ANC for Levon Ter-Petrossian? We signed a document, in which it wasn’t written that we had come for Levon Ter-Petrossian, but we had come for establishing democracy and the rule of law. Let the one who is a traitor leave. It would be good to put forward the issue of expelling Ter-Petrossian from the ANC. It is not on the agenda yet, but perhaps we will raise it.” We inquired what plans they had. R. Torosyan responded, “To dismiss Mukuchyan, not to let Tsarukyan participate in the election, to impeach Serzh Sargsyan, to clean the territory around Opera, to take a few graves out of Komitas Park, which I should do as a member of the city council.”

Mr. Torosyan thinks that it is not right that L. Ter-Petrossian defends the Prosperous Armenia Party (PAP). He also thinks that the first President of the Republic of Armenia was not right when he raised the issue of prisoners of conscience and not of elections as the ultimate goal. Analyzing all this, R. Torosyan has come to the following conclusion, “As a result, Serzh Sargsyan has become the legitimate president, assisted by Levon Ter-Petrossian. The first president started his reincarnation process so well, but afterwards he ruined it.”

Coming back to the spread opinion that the ANC has compromised itself, R. Torosyan stated, “For me, the ANC has compromised itself, has turned into the Pan-Armenian National Movement (PANM), which the people don’t want to see. Unfortunately, a group of people compressed that beautiful organization and turned the Congress into the PANM.” In response to our question which was the point in R. Torosyan’s staying in the Congress, Mr. Torosyan responded in the following way, “One stays in the ANC to turn the ANC into the ANC it was.”
