“The Prospect That the Street Struggle Will Be Moved to Only the National Assembly Floor Is Unacceptable for Us”

May 21,2012 14:38

Today Armenian National Congress (ANC) member Petros Makeyan, the leader of the Democratic Motherland Party, is going to apply to the Congress in written and to make a proposal about the seats. During a conversation with www.aravot.am, Mr. Makeyan explained that it was not a “separate episode,” “At the end of the day, we have raised issues about the future actions, understanding the process, what our objective is. Those are general, complex issues and one episode is the issue of seats, which has not been discussed in the Congress and no decision has been made.”

We asked Mr. Makeyan to comment on the observation that how come that in 2007, the Impeachment Alliance, which his party was also a member of, criticized, along with the Conservative Party, the Heritage Party for assuming the offices and now the ANC, which includes also the Conservative and Democratic Motherland parties, was going to assume the offices. Mr. Makeyan said that the ANC hadn’t discussed and hadn’t made a decision of assuming the offices yet. We tried to get a clarification whether it was possible that they would still reject the offices, Mr. Makeyan said that they would assume, but they had to make it clear what moves they would make afterwards. As for the criticism against the Heritage Party at the time, Mr. Makeyan expressed his personal opinion that assuming offices was right, but if there was also struggle in the streets, there were continuous rallies and the National Assembly floor was also used.

In response to our question what impact it would have on his future moves, if the ANC refused to discuss the issue of assuming or rejecting the offices, Mr. Makeyan said, “We have already stated that the issue of assuming or not assuming the offices has not been discussed in the Congress, no decision has been made, i.e. we have to discuss that issue.” In response to a question, “Have we understood correctly that the arbitrary decision of individuals is unacceptable for you?” Mr. Makeyan said, “The prospect that, let’s say, street, square struggle will be moved only to the National Assembly floor is unacceptable for us.”
