2 Houses Collapsed in Syunik Because of Hail and Flood

This morning, because of heavy hail in the region of Syunik besides the villages of the district of Kapan, villages of the district of Meghri – Lehvaz, Shvanidzor and Vardanidzor – were badly damaged.

In the village of Shvanidzor, Meghri, heavy hail and flood caused destructions. In Shvanidzor, 2 houses collapsed and cots and gardens are destroyed. The roads connecting the village to the outside world and streets running through the village were all blocked by silt and covered with clay and stones brought by the flood.

According to Hovhannes Ohanyan, the headman of the village of Shvanidzor, one of the houses that collapsed belongs to a family of five, the house of which has been completely covered with water and silt. The other house that shared the destiny of the first one was occupied by a volunteer from the American Peace Corps who taught English at the village school.

“There is a danger that other houses will also collapse. The irrigation system, main canals, of the village was disrupted because of the flood. Electricity of the

village has also been paralyzed,” states the village headman who has found himself in water and silt.

According to the villagers, vegetable gardens and orchards – pomegranate trees, fig trees etc. – have suffered considerable damage.
