Exactly the Half of the Truth

June 01,2012 13:24

As it is known, a week ago a civilian massacre was carried out in Hula town, Syria, as a result of which at least 108 people, including 34 children were killed. In many cases, armed people just entered the apartments of residents of Hula and shot whole families with Kalashnikovs. That tragedy didn’t arouse interest in Armenia, as I understand it, it was neither particularly reported on, nor discussed. Well, certainly, it is more interesting for us how many times a certain newly- or “oldly-elected” MP has sneezed. Even the fact that a few tens of thousands of Armenians live in Syria cannot distract our attention from the sneezes and draw our attention to that not so distant country.

For me, the events taking place in Syria are also interesting because of how the West and Russia, the sides pursuing diametrically opposite interests in this issue, tell exactly the half of the truth – the half that is in their interest. One side explicitly wants to topple down Assad’s regime, using different kinds of sanctions and if necessary, also military force. Frankly speaking, I cannot understand quite clearly why the United States, in particular, longs for that, because it is not necessary that after toppling down Assad’s regime, a government that is more advantageous to the US will be formed. Well, Russia stubbornly wants to maintain Assad’s regime, because it completely corresponds to it mentally and therefore, closely cooperates with it militarily and economically. However, Russia cannot generally disregard massive killings and sometimes mildly rebukes “out of politeness,” “It is not good, dear Bashar, bro,” but when it comes to sanctions, it defends Bashar with might and main.

The West claims, based on the testimonies of those who survived the massacre in Hula, that the offenders were Shiites and Alawis – the Assad family adheres to that sect, therefore, those militants cannot help but be related to the pro-government forces. It is interesting that the amateur videos depicting the massacre are accompanied by the chant “Allah Akbar,” however it is not clear whether the butchers or the victims voice it. Moreover, CNN attaches the fragments with injured children to the fragments with Russian diplomats, in which they oppose sanctions against Syria. Russians, in turn, draw attention to the fact that not only civilians live in Homs region and Hula, in particular, and the Syrian opposition is generally not unarmed, to say the least.

Anyway, it would be huge idealism to believe the “idealistic” statements of great powers and to assume that they care for the dead children.
