Taxi Drivers Threaten to Cross the Turkish Border

June 22,2012 16:32

Today personal taxi drivers of Gyumri organized a protest in the vicinity of the Mother Armenia monument demanding from the government to revise the decision, according to which they should be licensed in order to continue working. “Why do they compare Gyumri with Yerevan, Gyumri is a dead town, taxis are more than people here, what do we get daily that they make us pay 16 thousand AMD, one should give another 15 thousand AMD for license. If one works all day long, one will not be able to pay for only their taxes. I earn 1500 AMD a day, at best, there are days when I have no clients, where should I get that 16000 AMD to pay? It is absurd, it is not possible for a driver in this town to earn such an amount. What do they want, they have destroyed Gyumri, a few people are left, are they driving

them away now? Have they seen how residents of Gyumri get on buses and emigrate from the country? Who will be held accountable for disappointment, at the end of the day, they are leaving so many families hungry,” one of the taxi drivers said during a conversation with www.aravot.am, threatening to ask for an asylum in Turkey – to go and become a subject of the Turk.

One of our interlocutors participated in the Artsakh war, he was annoyed that being a BA, he was not employed anywhere, they explain that he is 50 years old and is already old. “If I am not young, I don’t have the right to live, is that it? I have created something, now they want to take it away too. Come and hang the population of this town, both your and our souls will be saved, what do you want to say?” the freedom fighter said.

The complaints of the drivers against the amendments to the Administrative Violations Act, Article 1372 of which concerns those who are engaged in passenger transportation and provides for huge fines in case of not being licensed and not having yellow license plates. According to the drivers, the law hasn’t come into force yet, but a few people have already been fined 50 thousand AMD in Gyumri.
