At the end of the year, they intend to complete the volume about the history of all settlements in the region of Shahumyan, Artsakh. Monument expert Samvel Karapetyan informed www.aravot.am about this. Besides the history of Shahumyan, the book will contain detailed information about all historical and cultural monuments in the region of Shahumyan. “The examination of monuments was made in the 1980s. We measured and photographed all monuments and deciphered inscriptions. The gathered material has been elaborated on during the past years, the information about the monuments have been corroborated with library and archive materials. In sum, more than 250 monuments have been registered,” Samvel Karapetyan says, adding that the region of Shahumyan, occupying 700km², was rich in various monuments – monuments of defenses, worship, engineering and archeology. “Presently tombstones and khachkars are in bad shape, churches, in particular, were targets of demolition,” the monument expert concluded.
