“Listening to the speech of the first president at the rally yesterday, I felt once again that there are always reasons for surprise in politics,” National Assembly Deputy Speaker Eduard Sharmazanov, the press secretary of the Republican Party of Armenia (RPA), commented on Levon Ter-Petrossian’s speech at the Armenian National Congress (ANC) rally in this manner.
According to Sharmazanov, “The first president and the leader of the ANC preferred to make an analysis or interpretation of the co-chair countries’ latest statement, not to mention,
subjective, instead of presenting the reason that impedes the Nagorno-Karabakh negotiation process and Azerbaijan, which is the reason for that. I thought the first president would make not a subjective interpretation and a subjective assessment, but would clearly say why the Karbakh conflict and negotiations had reached a deadlock or why there were no developments. I expected him to say that Azerbaijan was engaged in militaristic rhetoric, that Azerbaijan carried out subversive actions at the local level and killed Armenian soldiers – Azerbaijan preached fascism and Armenophobia on the border, which could be noticed both in their actions and in the statements of their leadership. However, to my surprise, the first president not only avoided doing that, but even equated Armenia’s and Azerbaijan’s behavior and actions, which, I think, is ungrounded. We always expect from international organizations to mention the exact addressee while making various statements. We always say that unless they mention the obstacle, i.e. the one who preaches war, and while they equate Armenia and Azerbaijan, there is always a threat that the negotiations will not develop. Now the first president of our country does the same thing, which, I think, is not grounded.”
