“I am generally for Vano Siradeghyan’s return to Armenia. And if there are contentious issues regarding his name and his actions, those issues should be resolved in Armenia and in the framework of the Armenian legislation,” Styopa Safaryan, the secretary of the Heritage Party, stated during a conversation with www.aravot.am today in regard to the signature collecting in the Yelk (way out) group on Facebook.

In his words, “I should say that Vano Siradeghyan’s long-lasting ‘escape’ from Armenia, the compelled escape testifies to one thing that the answers to the questions regarding Vano Siradeghyan have not been given so far. These answers were given in the manner that was in the interest of the former president and his authority. Therefore, taking into account that those answers will never be trustworthy, since the trial and the answers to those questions were given after Vano Siradeghyan, they testify to one thing that there should a new reliable process and for that, it is desirable that Vano Siradeghyan is in Armenia and comes back to Armenia. In regard to this, yes, his presence in Armenia is important at least for getting the answers to those questions. Also, at the end of the day, Vano Siradeghyan is also an intellectual, a writer, his writings are appreciated by a part of the society as literary works and in this regard, the initiative to bring him back as an intellectual is acceptable for me.”

The police explained that if Vano Siradeghyan came to Armenia, he would be immediately arrested and put into jail. In regard to this, Mr. Safaryan said, “The police had to say so, because the government had started an international search for Vano Siradghyan, therefore, according to the legislation, if Vano Siradeghyan comes back to Armenia, his arrest should follow.” In order that Vano Siradeghyan is not arrested, the Armenian government should stop an international search for him.

Galust Sahakyan, the deputy chairman of the Republican Party of Armenia (RPA), said about Vano Siradeghyan that he was a serious politician and a historical phenomenon. In response to our question what was the reason that one the leading figures of the RPA had said so, Mr. Safaryan said, “If he is a historical phenomenon, I think the ruling party can make that move, stopping an international search for Vano Siradeghyan.”
