Have Syrian Armenians Taken Offense at Armenia? (Video)

August 01,2012 17:37

www.aravot.am inquired during a conversation with Arabist Sargis Grigoryan whether the Armenian government wasn’t responding to Syrian Armenians’ problems a bit too late, in his assessment, particularly given the fact that the Ministry of Diaspora was discussing the ways of solving these problems as late as today, whereas Syrian Armenians had been in an alarming state for many days already. The Arabist replied, “Perhaps they are a bit late, but according to my information, the possible steps are taken by the Armenian side. There is a problem regarding Armavia’s additional flight to Aleppo. They promised that it would be free, but a round trip will cost around $420. Surely, it is a private company, it has its policy, but the Armenian government could have made offers to organize additional flights under better conditions or to give tickets for free.”

Mr. Grigoryan noted that Syrian Armenians don’t have losses only thanks to the organization of their community.

In response to our question whether Syrian Armenians expressed discontent with the Armenian side’s passiveness also during conversations with them, since during a conversation with us, some of them had expressed an idea that Armenia remembered the Diaspora only when it needed help, S. Grigoryan said the following, “Actually, there is a lot of discontent. We talk, we know, but the general sentiment is that Armenia is the Motherland and the last resort. There are also controversial opinions that the Armenian side is not active.”
