www.aravot.am inquired during a conversation with Alexander Markarov, a political scientist, whether the policy pursued by the government, according to which it was put forward that there was no panic among Syrian Armenians, whereas they – Syrian Armenians spoke of panic, was the right one.
The political scientist replied, “The community that lives in Syria, its members – Syrian Armenians – are citizens of the given country and one of the main functions of the given country is to ensure the security of its own citizens, including representatives of the Syrian Armenian community.” Not clearly answering the question we had asked, he noted that the Armenian community in Syria was one of the biggest communities of the Armenian Diaspora, therefore, its security should first of all concern Armenia.
Talking about supporting Syrian Armenians in the Republic of Armenia, A. Makarov also raised the question of their integration in the Armenian society. We noted in that regard that one could notice an increase in prices in the housing market of Armenia, therefore, we inquired whether we would contribute to Syrian Armenians’ integration in this manner. The political scientist replied, “As you may remember, the pricing is conditional on the respective functions of the market and the state role in it is very limited. On the other hand, one may say that the state should give apartments to Syrian Armenians. Those issues may be solved by the Ministry of Diaspora. And those processes take place in the market; they are beyond the state’s reach.”
