“There Has Been a Serious Discussion on the Safarov Case in the PACE Committee on Legal Affairs,” Davit Harutyunyan Says

September 07,2012 15:03

The issue of Safarov’s extradition and Azerbaijan has been discussed at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe Monitoring Committee a few days ago. Davit Harutyunyan, the leader of the Armenian delegation to PACE, a member of the Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) parliamentary group and the chairman of the committee on state and legal affairs, promised to www.aravot.am to present details after coming back to Yerevan. During a conversation with us today, Mr. Harutyunyan stated that “since the PACE Monitoring Committee meetings are behind closed doors, as a rule, ethics require not to present any details of the meeting. I can only say that both of us – Armen Rustamyan and I –made speeches not only regarding the Safarov case, but also Azerbaijan’s preliminary report, which had been made by Azerbaijan’s rapporteurs. We criticized that report rather seriously. There were few responses and that was the reason for my statement that the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe was collapsing. Afterwards, there was a more serious discussion at the legal affairs committee on the Safarov case in particular.”
